The purpose and scope of the International Journal of Thermodynamics (IJoT) is

  • to provide a forum for the publication of original theoretical and applied work in the field of thermodynamics as it relates to systems, states, processes, and both non-equilibrium and equilibrium phenomena at all temporal and spatial scales.
  • to provide a multidisciplinary and international platform for the dissemination to academia and industry of both scientific and engineering contributions, which touch upon a broad class of disciplines that are foundationally linked to thermodynamics and the methods and analyses derived there from.
  • to assess how both the first and particularly the second laws of thermodynamics touch upon these disciplines.
  • to highlight innovative & pioneer research in the field of thermodynamics in the following subjects (but not limited to the following, novel research in new areas are strongly suggested):

o Entropy in thermodynamics and information theory.

o Thermodynamics in process intensification.

o Biothermodynamics (topics such as self-organization far from equilibrium etc.)

o Thermodynamics of nonadditive systems.

o Nonequilibrium thermal complex systems.

o Sustainable design and thermodynamics.

o Engineering thermodynamics.

o Energy.

Author Guidelines

Dear Authors

You can reach the article format here for your submission.

You can reach the copyright transfer form here for your submission.

IJoT reserves the right not to publish any accepted paper that is not properly formatted and edited, including for proper English. While IJoT will work with the authors to prepare their papers, ultimately the authors take primary responsibility for formatting their paper according to these guidelines and editing for proper English.

Authors are requested to pay special attention to the following, as these are the most common problems that delay publication of papers:

  • Papers should not exceed 8-10 pages and should be structured as follows: Abstract; Introduction; Methodology or similar; Results or similar; Conclusions; Acknowledgements; Nomenclature; and, References.
  • The primary dimensions for the paper are summarized in Table 1 in the Template. A two-column format is used for the body. In the page layout, margins should be 1.5 cm, the gutter should be 0.5 cm, as in the template. Multiple pages setting should be “mirror pages”. Paper size must be “A4”. The distance from the edge of the header and footer should be 1 cm.
  • The part after Keywords should be in two columns as in the template. Column width must be 8.5 cm and space between columns must be 0.5 cm.
  • All figures, tables, equations and text must fit within the margins.
  • Times New Roman must be used throughout the paper.
  • The font color throughout the text should be black. Not light shades of black.
  • The information at the beginning of the first page in the template should be in the article.
  • Submission type must write top of the first page as in the template.
  • At the beginning of the paper, in the part above the abstract, paragraph spacing settings and font sizes (including blank lines) should be exactly as in the template.
  • Under the title, the writer name must be at correct format (initials of names and full of last name).
  • Only the initials of the words should be capitalized in the title of the article and in all titles within the article.
  • Font size must be 10 pt throughout the body of the paper except for the header, title, author names, submission type and footer.
  • Paragraph spacing should be zero throughout the text, except for the References section. As in the template, a blank line is placed where there should be spaces. Other than that, paragraph spacing is not added.
  • The corresponding author name must be marked as corresponding author.
  • All authors must be numbered and, all affiliations and emails also be numbered to show whose informations are they.
  • All authors’ orcid numbers should be next to the author's name. It is a obligatory for the journal that all authors’ orcid numbers must be given. Therefore, an author must register to the orcid number system and must have an orcid number who does not have one.
  • At least the e-mail address of the corresponding author must be given.
  • Abstract and keywords should be in a single column as in the template.
  • There must be 0.5 cm spaces on the left and right sides of the abstract and keywords parts.
  • In the Keywords section, only the first letter of the first keyword should be capitalized, and all the letters of the following keywords should be lowercase.
  • It should have page footers as in the template.
  • As in the template, the titles in the article should be numbered. Secondary titles must also be numbered as in template.
  • The body should be single spaced and justified.
  • The first line of all paragraphs should be indented 0.5 cm. Any other parts of the text shouldn’t have extra indents.
  • The unnecessary spaces throughout the text should be arranged so that they are not.
  • All tables and figures must be of high quality, legible, and make good use of horizontal and vertical space. All texts in all figures must be legible.
  • Tables must be the same format as the template.
  • Large figures and tables that span both columns must be at the top or bottom of a page.
  • Table must be given in one page if they fit. If it is given in two pages, the part of the second page is also named like first part of the table with addition “(continue)”.
  • A figure should not be divided into two pages.
  • Font sizes of 8 or 10 are appropriate for figures and tables. It is important that all texts in Figures and Tables be legible.
  • All table and figure titles are in italics and conclude with a period, must not be bold.
  • Single line titles are centered while multi-line titles are justified.
  • In the body of the paper, refer to figures and tables using the full word “Table 1” and “Figure 1.”
  • There must be a blank line before and after figures and tables.
  • The font size and font style in all equations must be as in the Table 2 in the Template.
  • All equations should be numbered.
  • The equation should be on the far left of the line, and the equation number should be on the far right of the line in paranthesis.
  • Equations that can fit on one line should not be given in two lines.
  • Equation numbers should be on the same line as the equation if they fit.
  • There must be a blank line between a body and an equation or between equations.
  • It has to be “Nomenclature” part before the references part. The nomenclature part must contain the definitions and units of all variables that in the equations. The nomenclature should include definitions and appropriate SI (metric) dimensions for the variables used. Acronyms should also be placed in alphabetical order.
  • “References” part must fit the template exactly. All papers published in IJoT must follow the IEEE Citation and Reference Style. Specific reference examples are as follow in the Template: journal article [2]; journal article with doi [3]; book [4]; conference article [5]; dissertation [6]; and online resource [1]. Detailed reference formats for other types of sources are readily available in IEEE Citation Reference: http://www.ieee.org/documents/ieeecitationref.pdf . IJOT encourage authors to use Mendeley as their reference management software or use any other reference management software. You can download Mendeley for free from its website. Authors are required to select "IEEE" as the citation style from the corresponding Mendeley plug-in in MS Word. Mendeley manages your citations and bibliography formatted in the journal's style.
  • References numbers in References part must be in the square brackets.
  • All references given in the "References" section must be cited in the text by giving the reference number as described in the IEEE Citation Reference.

Evaluation Process

  • The manuscripts are first evaluated by the Editor/ Associate Editors. At this stage, the journal's purpose, scope and scientific field are checked for suitability. In addition, studies with grammatical (English) and expression rules, scientifically critical errors and studies that do not have original value are returned after a preliminary review. The returned studies are notified to the corresponding author.
  • Articles that pass the preliminary review are sent to a Section Editor or Co-Editor for the field the study is related to. The assigned Editor/s or Co-Editor/s examine the article in detail. If the article is not deemed appropriate by the Editor/s as a result of the examinations, it is returned to the corresponding author with a report.
  • Articles are sent to at least 3 Reviewers taking into account their content and fields of science. Blind review is applied in article evaluations in International Jorunral of Thermodynamics. At least 3 expert reviewer reports are taken into consideration for each study. The names of the reviewers who evaluate the work are not disclosed to the authors. Articles sent to reviewers are expected to be evaluated within 30 days. If this period is exceeded, the Editor will remind the reviewer and give an additional 7 days. If a reviewer does not evaluate the article within this period, a new reviewer is assigned to the article.
  • The evaluation reports from the reviewers are reviewed by the Section Editor/Co-Editor. As a result of this review, the Section Editor/Co-Editor makes the final decisions to “Accept”, “Revision” or “Reject” of the study. Articles that receive positive review reports from the article evaluation are eligible for publication. In articles that are deemed inadequate based on reviewer evaluation reports, a decision for major or minor revision is made. Articles for which revision is requested are submitted to the relevant reviewers for evaluation after the requested corrections are made. If a positive report is given, the study is eligible for publication. If deemed necessary by the Editor/Section Editor/Co-Editor, they may also send the manuscript to reviewers.
  • As a result of the review, authors are expected to make and answer all questions/requests specified in the reviewer reports.
  • Authors are given 15 days for correction. If the necessary corrections/edits are not made within this period, the article is returned to the authors.
  • Accepted articles are sent to Publishing Editor/s and the necessary edits are requested for the final version.

Our publication ethics and publication malpractice statement is mainly based on the Code of Conduct and Best-Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors (Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), 2011).

Editors' responsibilities

Publication decisions

The editor is responsible for deciding which of the papers submitted to the journal will be published. The editor will evaluate manuscripts without regard to the authors' race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy. The decision will be based on the paper’s importance, originality and clarity, and the study’s validity and its relevance to the journal's scope. Current legal requirements regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism should also be considered.

Confidentiality

The editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted paper will not be used by the editor or the members of the editorial board for their own research purposes without the author's explicit written consent.

Reviewers' responsibilities

Contribution to editorial decisions The peer-reviewing process assists the editor and the editorial board in making editorial decisions and may also serve the author in improving the paper.

Promptness Any selected referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and withdraw from the review process.

Confidentiality

Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be disclosed to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.

Standards of objectivity

Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Referees should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.

Acknowledgment of sources

Reviewers should identify cases in which relevant published work referred to in the paper has not been cited in the reference section. They should point out whether observations or arguments derived from other publications are accompanied by the respective source. Reviewers will notify the editor of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.

Disclosure and conflict of interest

Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions associated with the papers.

Authors' duties

Reporting standards

Authors of original research reports should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.

Data access and retention

Authors could be asked to provide the raw data of their study together with the paper for editorial review and should be prepared to make the data publicly available if practicable. In any event, authors should ensure accessibility of such data to other competent professionals for at least ten years after publication (preferably via an institutional or subject-based data repository or other data center), provided that the confidentiality of the participants can be protected and legal rights concerning proprietary data do not preclude their release.

Originality, plagiarism and acknowledgment of sources

Authors will submit only entirely original works, and will appropriately cite or quote the work and/or words of others. Publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work should also be cited. The similarity report should be uploaded in PDF format by using a plagiarism software which determines the similarity rates such as iThenticate/Academic Paradigms, LLC-Check For Plagiarism/Grammarly-Plagiarism Checker. The report must be not exceeded the rate of 20%.

Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication

In general, papers describing essentially the same research should not be published in more than one journal. Submitting the same paper to more than one journal constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable. Manuscripts which have been published as copyrighted material elsewhere cannot be submitted. In addition, manuscripts under review by the journal should not be resubmitted to copyrighted publications. However, by submitting a manuscript, the author(s) retain the rights to the published material. In case of publication they permit the use of their work under a CC-BY license [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode], which means material subject to Copyright and Similar Rights that is derived from or based upon the Licensed Material and in which the Licensed Material is translated, altered, arranged, transformed, or otherwise modified in a manner requiring permission under the Copyright and Similar Rights held by the Licensor.

Authorship of the paper

Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. The corresponding author ensures that all contributing co-authors and no uninvolved persons are included in the author list. The corresponding author will also verify that all co-authors have approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest

All authors should include a statement disclosing any financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that may be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.

Fundamental errors in published works

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and to cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper in form of an erratum.

Open Access Statement

International Journal of Thermodynamics (IJoT) adheres to the Budapest Open Access Initiative and defines its Open Access policy according to the definition developed in the original BOAI:

By “open access” to [peer-reviewed research literature], we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited. [See, http://www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org/boai-10-recommendations]

IJoT views open-access to academic publications and research as an immutable part of academic endeavor. The publisher recognizes the essence of public good provided by the journal and hence accepts its responsibility as a public service to academic and intellectual betterment.

The publisher is committed to the open access to all academic endeavor and as such, accepts its duty to make published content permanently available and freely accesible by all sections of worldwide academic community. The publisher does not charge any pecuniary fees for processing, submission, and publication of manuscripts. The publisher commits to the free and universal access to its published content in perpetuity.

The publisher via its host providing institution Dergipark uses Lockss for the archiving and preservation of its online content.

All copyright, re-publishing and re-using rights, all intellectual property rights, without any exception, belongs to the authors of the published manuscript.

In IJoT, there is no fee charges under any procedure for submitting or publishing an article.
